After the fall of Roman rule, the Visigoths came to Girona and seized power. The Visigoths were eventually replaced by the Moors. It was not until 785 that Charlemagne succeeded in regaining the city and so the city was made one of the then 14 counties in Catalonia. In the 12th century, Girona had grown so much in importance that the region was awarded city rights by Alfonso II.
The county of Girona became a duchy in 1351. There is still a Prince of Girona. Currently this is the Spanish Crown Prince Felipe.

Worth knowing and cultural things in Girona

The 12th century in Girona was strongly influenced by Judaism. A large Jewish community lived in the city and established one of the most important Kabbalistic schools in Europe. The Chief Rabiner of Catalonia came from Girona. His name was Nachmanides. When all Jews were expelled from Spain by the Alhambra Edict in 1492, the history and splendid times of the Jewish community in Girona ended. Today is the Jewish Ghetto one of the best preserved in Europe. It is also an attraction for many visitors and tourists. “Call” can be found in almost every travel guide.

Even Napoleon left its mark in the region. He conquered the city of Girona in 1809. He was successful after a seven-month battle and he had the city walls razed. This was initially a restriction on the protection and safety of residents. So they were always under control. However, later in the 19th century, this measure made it possible to expand the city limits and thus expand the urban area.

Today Girona has a very large treasure trove of impressive monuments of contemporary history. Almost every era has left its mark here. So today as a tourist you have many opportunities to visit the impressive buildings, monuments and squares even in the smallest of spaces. The large number of these important legacies and, above all, the abundance of closely spaced monuments is impressive.

The Cathedral of Santa Maria is particularly recommended. This church is the symbol of the city and was built over centuries and worked on over and over again. For example, the facades date from the Baroque era and were built from 1659 to 1793. The beautiful outside staircase was built at the end of the 17th century. The construction of the cathedral began around 1300. It was not until the 17th century that the vault could be completed. In 1417 there was an architectural change to the building plans. The nave was redesigned into a hall. This created the ribbed vault. It is 23 meters wide and 34 meters high. With this imposing size, it is also the largest medieval hall in all of Europe.
